	• Research on Decedents – Researchers may use and disclose a decedent’s PHI for research purposes without IRB review. – The following criteria must be met in the form of a statement to the covered entity: • The use will be solely for research on the PHI of a decedent. • The PHI sought is necessary for the purposes of the research. • The researcher has documentation of the death of the individual about whom information is being sought.
