After irrigating the wounds, the proximal wound is closed in layers oversuction drains. A soft compression dressing is then applied.
The patient is allowed to ambulate on crutches with toe touching untilgood callous formation is observed on x-ray. Once this has occurred, partialweight bearing is started with gradual progression over a six- to eight-weekperiod. Strengthening exercises for the entire lower extremity and rangeof motion are started immediately. The fracture callous is allowed to maturecompletely and the fixation device may be removed 15 to 18 months postoperativelyif complete healing is observed.
Should extractionof the nail become necessary, the Large Threaded Extraction Adaptor is threadedinto the end of the nail and the Slaphammer is threaded onto the Large ExtractionAdaptor to extract the nail (click image to enlarge).
